Ocean Sailing on Alyosha

The Chill or the Thrill — Depending on the Weather

Come out and experience ocean sailing on a 50-foot catamaran. This nearly 2-hour adventure takes you through the OC Inlet and out onto the Atlantic Ocean, where the fun really begins: the diesel engines cut off, the sails go up, and the boat moves along effortlessly under nothing but wind power. Yes, this trip is about sailing.

Watch Ocean City fade into the horizon as the crystal clear Atlantic waters surround the boat. Pods of dolphins often swim right off the bow—a once-in-a-lifetime natural experience. There is plenty of room aboard Alyosha for you to spread out and enjoy yourself. We encourage guests to claim a spot on the wide trampolines at the front of the boat for lounging, or settle into the cushioned seating on deck. There’s also sheltered seating in the spacious cockpit if the open deck feels like too much.

After your initial trip we also have other ocean adventure trips here.

What to Expect on Your Ocean Sailing Trip

The trip lasts just under two hours. We’ll head through the OC Inlet—often the roughest part of the entire journey—and then let the wind dictate the triangular course we sail. Depending on the weather, you’ll get either the “chill” or the “thrill” of ocean sailing. Typically, June through August on the Atlantic Coast features gentle, rolling swells as a sea breeze builds throughout the day. But not every day is typical.

Keep in mind: this is real open ocean sailing. The captain and crew have yet to be able to control the wind and seas… although there is no lack of effort on that account.

Want a longer sail? Try Ocean Sailing “Advanced,” where we go for over four hours out on the Atlantic.

Who Is This Trip For?

This experience is designed as an introduction to ocean sailing. It’s appropriate for most children above age 4 or 5, and for seniors with fair mobility. Whether you’ve never been on a sailboat or you’re a seasoned sailor looking for a fun afternoon on the water, this trip works. It can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and even a gateway into the sport of sailing—an incredible way to see “the other side” of Ocean City.

If you are celebrating a special event like birthday or anniversary let us know!

A Note on Motion Sickness

Alyosha is a big, stable sailing catamaran, and she sails flat. But there can be motion in ocean sailing, and if you’re prone to seasickness, you should plan to take preventative medicine before we leave the dock. Once you’re feeling sick, it’s too late. We recommend Bonine or Dramamine.

If you’re on the fence, take a look at our Seasickness Guide!

Weather & Cancellation

This trip is weather dependent. If the captain feels there’s any risk—mainly lightning—the trip will be cancelled and you’ll receive a full refund, no questions asked.

We need a minimum of 4 people for this trip to go out. If your party is fewer than 4, go ahead and book anyway—you’ll receive a full refund if the trip doesn’t go forward.

What to Bring

Feel free to bring any food or drinks you’d like onboard. Alyosha has plenty of bottled water for customers. There’s plenty of room to spread out: trampolines built for lounging and cushioned seating for an additional 6 people.

There are restrooms (“heads”) aboard for customer use—just keep in mind the toilets on a sailboat are a little more sensitive than the ones on land. For sun protection, the real action is outside on deck, so we recommend plenty of sunscreen and sunglasses. Alyosha also has a roomy salon area and cabins if you need a break from the sun.

No experience necessary. This trip is designed as an introduction to ocean sailing and is open to everyone — first-timers, families, and seasoned sailors alike. Just show up and enjoy the ride.

Alyosha is a large, stable 50-foot catamaran and sails flat. That said, this is real ocean sailing and conditions vary. If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend taking Bonine or Dramamine before you leave the dock (making sure you have checked with your physician)— once you’re feeling sick, it’s too late.
Don’t forget we have calm water trips with our Assateague trips.

The trip lasts just under 2 hours. You’ll head out through the OC Inlet and onto the Atlantic Ocean, where the sails go up and the engines cut off. We depart from Olde Towne Marina at 307 Dorchester Street in Ocean City, MD.

Getting Here

Trips depart promptly at the scheduled time from our slip at Olde Towne Marina (307 Dorchester Street, Ocean City, 21842). Plan to arrive about 5 minutes before departure—there’s no formal check-in. But please know: if we have other guests and you’re late, we will still leave on time. It’s not fair to punctual guests to make them wait. Parking can be a challenge, so arrive early and maybe have a drink at the restaurant next to the marina.
